When is the best time for classical music in Salzburg?

July–August for the Salzburg Festival (opera, Vienna Philharmoniker, world-class programming — but highest prices and crowds). January for the Mozartwoche (best Mozart-focused programming of the year, far less crowded). May/June for the Whitsun Festival. Year-round: Fortress and Mirabell Palace concerts run most evenings from April through October, and the Mozarteum has its subscription season September–June.

Salzburg’s musical year: overview

Salzburg is one of very few cities in the world where serious classical music is genuinely available year-round, at multiple quality levels, in multiple venue contexts. This is not a seasonal tourist construct — the Mozarteum Foundation runs a continuous educational and concert programme, the Festspielhaus is in use for 8–9 months of the year, and even the tourist-facing venues (Fortress, Mirabell) operate most evenings for 8–9 months.

Understanding the calendar helps you choose: whether to time your visit around the highest-quality programming, the lowest prices, the most comfortable crowds, or the most atmospheric seasonal events.

Month-by-month guide

January — the Mozartwoche

The year’s most concentrated Mozart programming. The Mozartwoche (Mozart Week), organised by the Mozarteum Foundation, runs 10 days in late January, timed to Mozart’s birthday (27 January 1756). Typical programming: full orchestral concerts conducted by internationally recognised artists (recent editions have featured Teodor Currentzis, Jordi Savall, and others), complete opera productions, chamber music, Lieder recitals, and early music performances.

Ticket prices: €35–120+ depending on the event. Available from October at mozarteum.at.

January is also low season: hotel prices 30–50% below August levels, the city quiet, no summer crowds, and the Alps visible (sometimes snow-covered) from the Altstadt. For the music-focused visitor, late January is arguably the best month to visit Salzburg.

The Fortress and Mirabell concerts run less frequently in January — check current schedules.

February–March — Mozarteum subscription season

The Mozarteumorchester Salzburg subscription season is in full operation through March. The Großer Saal hosts orchestral concerts, chamber music from visiting groups, and solo recitals. Lower-profile months commercially, which means good availability and reasonable accommodation pricing.

The Fortress and Mirabell concert series typically operates at reduced frequency or may pause from November through March depending on the specific season. Confirm at salzburg-concerts.com before building your itinerary around them.

April — spring reopening

April is when the tourist concert circuit reopens at full frequency. The Fortress starts its nightly schedule again (typically from Easter weekend). The Mirabell Palace concert series resumes. Spring light over the Altstadt and the fortress is spectacular.

April accommodation pricing is reasonable (pre-peak season). The Mozarteum concert season continues until May/June.

May/June — Whitsun Festival + end of Mozarteum season

Pfingstfestspiele (Whitsun/Pentecost Festival): Usually the last weekend of May or first weekend of June (Pentecost Sunday falls 49 days after Easter — the date shifts by up to 5 weeks year to year). A 4-day festival with one major opera production and several concerts. Booking opens with the summer Festival in January. Tickets significantly more available than the main summer Festival.

This is many music lovers’ preferred Festival option: world-class programming, the city at its best (warm, uncrowded, green), accommodation at normal shoulder-season prices. Our Salzburg Festival guide covers the Whitsun Festival in detail.

The Mozarteumsorchester’s subscription season typically concludes in May or June.

July–August — Salzburg Festival

The major event. The Salzburger Festspiele runs from late July through the end of August, approximately 5–6 weeks. Full detail in our Salzburg Festival guide and tickets guide.

For non-Festival visitors: July–August is also the most expensive, most crowded time to visit Salzburg. The city is genuinely beautiful and vibrant, but accommodation costs 40–70% above shoulder season, restaurants are fully booked, and the Altstadt is packed. If your visit is not specifically for the Festival, May/June or September/October are better months.

The Fortress and Mirabell concerts operate nightly in July–August — these are always available even without Festival tickets.

September — shoulder season excellence

September is arguably the best month for a general visit to Salzburg that includes classical music. The Festival has concluded; crowds thin dramatically (though Hallstatt remains busy into September); accommodation prices drop; and the Mozarteumsorchester subscription season resumes, typically in mid-September.

The Fortress and Mirabell concerts continue through October. Weather in September is often excellent — warm days, cooler evenings, the lakes of the Salzkammergut still swimmable into mid-September.

October — final concert season before winter

October continues the Mozarteum season and the tourist concerts (Fortress and Mirabell). The Altstadt is beautiful in autumn light. Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut reach their quietest and most atmospheric.

From late October, the Fortress concert series may reduce frequency; check current schedules.

November — transition

Early November: the last of the outdoor and tourist concert series. Late November: the Advent market season begins at Domplatz and Hellbrunn. The Christmas concert series at the Fortress begins — the Advent Concert at the Fortress is a specific ticketed series running through December.

Salzburg: Christmas/Advent Concert at Fortress Hohensalzburg — the winter concert series

December — Advent season

Salzburg is one of the best Christmas market cities in Central Europe. Musically: the Fortress Advent Concert series, Cathedral Advent concerts (including the famous Stille Nacht / Silent Night services), and the Mirabell Marble Hall Christmas concerts.

The Hellbrunn Advent market is a separate event from the main Domplatz market — more charming, less commercial — with occasional live music. See our Christmas in Salzburg guide.

Ticket prices for December concerts are generally comparable to summer; availability is higher. Book 1–2 weeks ahead.
